Look Good This Summer: How to Get Armpit Stains Out of Your Clothes

There’s still plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful weather before the end of summer!

Whether you plan on sporting a white button-down shirt, a light-colored tank top, a printed sundress or a swimsuit coverup, looking good at the Shore is a must. The problem is, how do you prevent those pesky, yellow-colored armpit stains from killing your good style – and confidence?

Prevention is everything. A few smart tricks up your sleeve – literally – will help prevent armpit stains from ruining your afternoon at the Shore.

Prevent Sweat Stains on Your Beach Clothes

Sweat is actually clear, but it’s the combination of sweat on your clothes and the salt, proteins and oils in your sweat that leave behind residue. The yellow color shows up when the sweat patches are left to dry, or if there’s build-up of deodorant mixed in.

The best way to prevent sweat stains is to wear loose-fitted clothing that is made from natural fibres like cotton or linen. Fibres like these allow your sweat to evaporate more easily than synthetic materials.

Second, make sure that your deodorant is completely dry before putting on clothes. You can also try a “dry on” product like an aerosol deodorant. Finally, make sure that you aren’t using too much deodorant. Some people lather on their antiperspirant, especially before going to the beach, and this only causes more build-up and sweat stains.

Removing Armpit Stains from Your Clothes

Despite your best efforts, it’s still possible to get armpit stains when you spend an entire day out in the hot sun. If this is the case, there are things you can do to remove the stains and keep yourself looking good. Remember, any type of stain is best cleaned as soon as possible, so we recommend washing your clothes as soon as you return home from the Shore.

  • Soak your shirt in a bowl filled with 1 cup vinegar and 2 cups warm water for 20 minutes.
  • Mix together ½ cup baking soda, 1 tablespoon salt and 1 tablespoon hydrogen peroxide until it forms a paste.
  • Remove the shirt from the vinegar/water solution and ring it dry. Place the shirt on a flat surface and coat the stains in the paste mixture. Let it sit for 20 minutes.
  • Wash your shirt in a regular wash with the appropriate clothes.
